Not to mention that it will take a long time to put the car back on track.
With MR cars, things are much easier. Crash, replace the nose, continue race, make podium.

Looking at the angle of that seat it makes me wonder if maybe he'd actually be better off. On front impact, he doesn't move forward so much as he is compressed down in to that seat. The force would keep him pretty stationary, and I'm sure that cockpit around him is designed to be a little safety pod. Nothing can really end up in his lap.. though he may catch some major shin pain.

An impact powerful enough to get through the first 2/3rds of the car and rip out the engine will not end well for the driver no matter what. Racing is dangerous.

It's not about the position, it's about what's in front of the driver. A lot of stuff, including a big ass V6 engine, will be pushed towards the safety CF cell, and that won't be such a nice feeling, for the guy inside the cell.

The engine could be less of a safety shield and more of a harmful element.

The entire car in an accident is a 'harmful element'. There's no way for them to design it such that the driver will not be risking death and/or dismemberment. No matter the machine, the driver will always assume a greater risk of harm by stepping in it than a non-driver.

Explain how this is any different than a standard road-going car with the engine in front of the driver.
There are energy absorption regulations in the WEC rulebook, if this car passes those regulations it is no less safe than any other car on the grid.

They have to pass strenuous crash test. His legs will be fine. Crashes like Zinardi's are over thankfully.

Yes, but I got the feeling that MR LMP1 cars are safer for the driver than this FR ones.
And there's the longer time that takes to fix the car.
I still love how the car looks, despite the two drawbacks I see.
